About the story

Frankenstein, published in 1818, tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist with a powerful desire to unlock the secrets of life. Fascinated by the mysteries of nature, Victor studies chemistry and experiments with creating life. Eventually, he succeeds in bringing a creature to life using body parts from the dead. However, when the creature opens its eyes, Victor is horrified by its appearance and immediately regrets what he has done. Abandoned and alone, the creature must find its way in the world, facing rejection and fear from everyone it meets.

As the creature, who is often called “Frankenstein’s monster,” tries to understand its existence, it becomes bitter and angry over the rejection it faces. Longing for companionship, the creature begs Victor to create a companion for him, but Victor, fearing the consequences, refuses. This sets off a tragic chain of events, as the creature seeks revenge on Victor for bringing it into a life of suffering. As the creature and Victor confront each other, both are forced to face the consequences of their actions.

Throughout Frankenstein, Mary Shelley explores themes of ambition, isolation, and the dangers of pushing scientific boundaries without considering the ethical consequences.
