About the story
Gulliver’s Travels, published in 1726, tells the story of Lemuel Gulliver, a doctor and sailor, who travels to incredible lands. In his first adventure, Gulliver finds himself in Lilliput, a land of tiny people only six inches tall. To them, Gulliver is a giant, and he learns about their lives and the small things they argue about, which show how people can fight over unimportant issues.
In his next journey, Gulliver goes to Brobdingnag, a land of giants, where he is as small as a mouse to the people there. He experiences what it’s like to feel small and powerless, but he also learns about their lives and views. As he continues traveling, he visits other strange places, such as Laputa, a flying island where people are very smart but miss simple things, and the land of the Houyhnhnms, where wise horses rule and the humans, called Yahoos, act in wild, cruel ways.
Through Gulliver’s travels, Jonathan Swift uses humour and imagination to show how people can sometimes be foolish and how countries can fight over little things. Gulliver’s Travels is an entertaining story that makes readers think about human behaviour, kindness, and the importance of questioning what they see around them. This classic tale has stayed popular over the years, reminding us to look at the world with curiosity and an open mind.
Gulliver’s Travels is more than just an adventure story; it’s a clever look at human nature and society. Through Gulliver’s encounters with tiny people, giants, and wise horses, Jonathan Swift shows readers how people can sometimes be selfish, silly, or even cruel. By seeing the world through Gulliver’s eyes, readers are encouraged to think about their own lives and how they interact with others. Swift’s tale reminds us to question what we take for granted and to view our world with curiosity, compassion, and a willingness to learn.
